If India gets approval to host the Olympiad, it will be the country’s second largest global tournament after the 2013 World Championship match between Bishwanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen.
The All India Chess Federation (AICF) said on Saturday that it would bid for the 44th leg of the Chess Olympiad to be held later this year after withdrawing from Russia following the attack on Ukraine. “Yes, we are bidding for the Chess Olympiad this year,” AICF Secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan told PTI. The budget of the tournament will be 10 million dollars (about 75 crore rupees).
The Chess Olympiad is a biennial tournament where teams from about 190 countries face each other for two weeks. The 2022 stage was scheduled to be held in Moscow from 26 July to 8 August. But on Friday, the FIDE (International Chess Federation) decided to withdraw the Chess Olympiad and all other official competitions from Russia because it had invaded Ukraine.
The first Chess Olympiad and the 93rd FIDE Congress for the Disabled were also withdrawn from Russia. FIDE says it is working to find alternative dates and venues for the tournament.
